ASHRAE Standard 70-2023 Method of Testing the Performance of Air Outlets and Air Inlets (ANSI Approved), 2023
- ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 70-2023 [Go to Page]
- Contents
- Foreword
- 1. Purpose
- 2. Scope [Go to Page]
- 2.1 This standard includes the specifications for test instruments, facilities, installations, and procedures and methods of calculation for determining aerodynamic performance and sound generation of air outlets and air inlets.
- 2.2 The test methods in this standard apply to both isothermal and non-isothermal conditions.
- 3. Definitions
- 4. Instrumentation and Facilities [Go to Page]
- 4.1 Temperature Measurement. Temperature measuring instruments shall meet the requirements of ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 41.1 2 and the requirements of Sections 4.1.1 and 4.1.2.
- 4.2 Pressure Measurement. Pressure measuring instruments shall meet the requirements of ASHRAE Standard 41.3 3 and the requirements of Sections 4.2.1 through 4.2.4 below.
- 4.3 Airflow Rate Measurement. Airflow rate shall be measured in accordance with ASHRAE Standard 41.2 4 or the rotating vane anemometer flow measuring system shown in Normative Appendix F. Fans shall be located as shown by the test setups for each tes...
- 4.4 Air Velocity Measurement. Air velocity measurements shall be made with mechanical or electrical anemometers having an accuracy shown in Table 2 and in accordance with Sections 4.4.1 and 4.4.2.
- 4.5 Sound Measurement. The equipment and facility for the determination of sound power levels shall be in accordance with NAIS Standard 12.51 6, which specifies the instrumentation, acoustic test facilities, and uncertainty of the measurements. Locat...
- 5. Test Procedures [Go to Page]
- 5.1 Air Inlet or Outlet Static and Total Pressure. The test for outlet static and total pressure shall be conducted in accordance with the following subsections.
- 5.2 Throw, Spread, and Drop
- 5.3 Sound Generation
- 6. References
- Informative appendix A: Informative References and Bibliography
- Informative Appendix B: Throw Data Analysis and Application
- Informative Appendix C: Room Test Heaters
- Informative Appendix D: Sound Rating Determination
- Informative Appendix E: Draft Risk Assessment for the Outlets of Displacement Ventilation
- Normative Appendix F: Rotating Vane Anemometer Flow Measuring System [Go to Page]
- F1. General [Go to Page]
- F1.1 The rotating vane anemometer flow measuring system consists of a straight length of duct with a rotating vane anemometer, humidity measuring instrument, and a temperature probe (see Figure F-1). Optionally, a backpressure regulating device can b...
- F1.2 When constructing the rotating vane anemometer flowmeter, locate the rotating vane anemometer within 0.16 equivalent diameters of the center of the duct.
- F2. Calibration Procedure [Go to Page]
- F2.1 The most convenient and accurate method to calibrate a ducted rotating vane anemometer system in place is by using a flow standard such as a NIST-traceable flowmeter (see Figure F-2). Following is a list of components to be used for calibrating ...
- F2.2 The rotating vane anemometer flow station must be constructed to minimize the potential for leakage. The flowmeter and calibrating airflow meter shall be concentric, straight, and level.
- F2.3 The rotating vane anemometer measuring system must be calibrated over its entire range of use.
- F2.4 The target of the calibration is to create an empirical mathematic equation that relates frequency output from the rotating vane anemometer to flow rate. The rotating vane anemometer typically will have an extremely wide flow range. Several flow... [Go to Page]
