The inherent properties of concrete masonry, including strength, durability, and fire safety, have been well documented, though a perception of high cost persists. Due to significant changes to codes and standards that increased the flexibility of concrete masonry structural design, this construction method may also offer cost-effective and energy-efficient alternative solutions. This course reviews changes to ASTM C90 and the masonry design standard and includes a discussion on the benefits and opportunities these requirements bring.

Learning Objectives

  • Review changes to ASTM C90 (the product standard for concrete masonry units) for web requirements and compressive strength and describe their impact on structural design to ensure safety and security.
  • Summarize research on the relationship between CMU strength and assembly strength and how this research has been incorporated into design standards and the building code.
  • Evaluate how increasing the base design strength of concrete masonry assemblies and modifying the standard web design can lead to more project sustainability, efficient use of materials, and constructability.
  • Compare costs of various construction assembly types.
