Improving Fire Door Specification and Inspection Effectiveness, 2024

Pamex Building fires claim nearly 4,000 lives each year in the U.S. It is the responsibility of building designers to do their utmost to prevent such fires and their accompanying loss of life. Often, the difference between life and death is as simple as a fire door that functions properly. This course focuses on describing how design professionals can reinforce their ability to ensure that fire doors are specified, installed, inspected, and maintained properly and that they meet or exceed all relevant code requirements. 60 minutes.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify and thus avoid potential fire door failure issues when specifying fire and smoke doors.
  • Specify comprehensive door installation inspection procedures.
  • Integrate relevant fire code requirements, including maintenance requirements, into fire door specifications.
  • Determine who is the most qualified person to specify and inspect fire and smoke doors.

Faculty BIO

Rick is passionate about the built environment. Throughout his career, he has been especially focused on the openings within structures'doors and windows. Where would we be without a way to move through and look out our offices and homes? Rick brings a vast amount of knowledge and experience regarding openings to any project he is associated with.



Rick is familiar with the codes and standards and if he doesn't know the answer, he knows where to find the information that is needed. Rick is authorized to perform third-party fire door assembly inspections for property owners and managers as mandated by the NFPA 80 and NFPA 101 standards and referenced in the International Fire Code and International Building Code. He is also skilled at preparing riser diagrams and point-to-point wiring diagrams for electrified hardware.



Rick's goal is to be a valued team member to his clients'someone they can rely on to assist them with meeting their goals and the goals of their customers.
