Designing Wind Uplift Resistant Roof Paving Systems, 2024

Wind forces always influence building design and detailing. This course focuses on one particular force, wind uplift, and its influence on roof paving system design and selection. It examines how wind loads and building configuration affect the design of roof paving systems; the codes, regulations, and calculation approaches that inform and control such designs; and the various options designers can use to design safe, appealing outdoor roof paving systems that will withstand even the strongest winds.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify where wind forces are strongest when designing rooftop patios.
  • Recall the relevant design criteria and applicable codes related to calculating wind uplift forces.
  • Specify the appropriate tests to ensure a safe and stable paver installation.
  • Identify and specify the most effective wind uplift resistant system for each roofing project.
  • Detail wind uplift lockdown systems, including edge restraints and parapet wall securements.

Faculty BIO

Rob Mulry began his career with Wausau Tile in 2007 as a Site Furnishings project manager. Since then, he's worked in our Paving and Terrazzo department as a project manager while also being our Senior Technical Product Manager for all product lines. In 2019, he was promoted to Paving Manager where his leadership skills began to shine, and in 2022, the Terrazzo Tile department came under his management. Rob's commitment to continued learning and growth, matched with his forward-thinking style, has helped Wausau Tile bring multiple new and exciting products to the market over the years. His leadership and innovation will continue to keep Wausau Tile at the forefront of product offerings while providing the highest standards of quality and customer service.
