Synthetic Turf for Recreation Applications, 2024

SYNLawn Communities need accessible, versatile surfaces for play and relaxation for people of all ages and abilities. Modern landscape synthetic turf options are specifically formulated for public recreation spaces frequented by adults, children, and pets. This course reviews the health benefits of being outdoors, the history and fabrication of synthetic turf, the design considerations for various recreation applications, and synthetic turf's performance and sustainability characteristics. 60 minutes.

Learning Objectives

  • Summarize how individuals benefit physically and mentally from time spent outdoors and how community wellness is affected by the implementation of green spaces.
  • Discuss the design considerations for playground, park and landscape, pet, and rooftop applications and the synthetic turf systems specifically designed to meet the safety and performance requirements of each application.
  • Specify synthetic turf to address concerns associated with water consumption, stormwater runoff, and drainage, constant use, pesticide and fertilizer use, and maintenance demands and impacts.
  • Employ the functional (impact attenuation and ADA compliance) and performance (heat reflection, antistatic, antimicrobial) properties of synthetic turf to design durable, code-compliant, safe, aesthetically appealing, accessible, and sustainable spaces for outdoor activity and relaxation.

Faculty BIO

Rob Dant's diverse upbringing in the military followed by a formal fine arts education eventually led to his career that embraces both visual and practical solutions for clients and customers. Highly creative, driven, and responsive to customers, he balances his role of growing small businesses and networks with his continued passion for environmentally responsible projects. Imbued with a love for balancing beauty and practicality, Mr. Dant presents an evenhanded approach to sustainable solutions involving synthetic turf. Addressing sustainable concerns such as erosion control, plant design, and usable space is a hallmark of his presentations. A seasoned speaker, he brings a deep knowledge of the industry, design concerns, and practicality to the forefront.

Bringing a decade of field and design experience, Colby Gingles enjoys engaging with the design and architect community and continuing to educate and push the boundaries of where synthetic turf can go.
