Combining Adhered and Anchored Brick Veneer, 2024

The Brick Industry Association Typically, all the brick selected for a given project will be either full bed depth (anchored) or thin brick (adhered); however, situations may benefit from combining the two types of masonry veneer on a project. The intent of this course is to differentiate between the types of brick masonry veneer, discuss the unique detailing required when combining veneer types, and provide project examples demonstrating where both types of masonry veneer have been successfully integrated. This course will focus on exterior applications of anchored and adhered masonry veneer. 75 minutes.

Learning Objectives

  • Recall the differences between adhered and anchored masonry veneer regarding support, connection to the backing, and wall function.
  • Summarize the building code requirements for adhered and anchored masonry veneer that ensure a structurally sound, safe, and durable installation.
  • Detail expansion joints and the transitions between adhered and anchored masonry veneer that accommodate movement and manage moisture, preventing structural issues.
  • Use project examples to explain how code restrictions, atypical bond patterns, and support, geometric, schedule, and site constraints influence veneer selection and specification and the longevity of the wall.

Faculty BIO

Cortney currently serves as Managing Senior Engineer in the Engineering & Research Department of the Brick Industry Association (BIA), where she develops technical documents, participates in codes and standards activities, and answers technical questions from architects, engineers, owners, and contractors. Prior to joining BIA, Cortney worked as a forensic consulting engineer investigating and repairing various types of architectural and structural problems in existing buildings, with a focus on masonry of all types, ranging from historic brick mass masonry to modern brick cavity and veneer wall construction. In addition to brick masonry, her projects involved materials such as structural clay tile, dimension stone, concrete, steel, and wood, typically occurring in combination with brick masonry.
