Accessible Site Furnishings: Solutions for Comfortable & Inclusive Outdoor Seating, 2024
CEU: 0.1 | CEU Code: TS-EN-187302-0525

Places of public accommodation and commercial facilities in the U.S. must follow the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements regarding many facets of design and landscaping, including site furnishings. This course reviews ADA requirements for tables and benches and the benefits to communities, people, and businesses of creating accessible outdoor seating areas for all to enjoy.

Learning Objectives

  • Define accessibility, its importance, and the key guidelines for creating an inclusive outdoor seating environment.
  • State the benefits of designing accessible outdoor spaces where all people, regardless of ability, can enjoy the outdoors.
  • Summarize the ADA requirements for outdoor table dimensions, placement, and aisles for ease of use and accessibility.
  • Explain the ADA requirements and the U.S. Access Board guidelines related to outdoor benches that facilitate comfort for the user and prevent injuries.
  • Recall the materials and finishes for site furnishings and how they affect the aesthetics and durability of the product.

Faculty BIO

I have been a proud member of the Graber Manufacturing, Inc. team since 2022. During my time with the company, I have learned a great deal about the products, challenges, and regulations present within the industry. With a focus on marketing for Madrax and Thomas Steele, I love being able to show contractors, architects, developers, and more the wide applications that our site amenities have and how they can offer solutions to common problems!
