High Efficiency and Low Carbon with IMPs, 2023

Architects and other design professionals have a critical role to play in reducing global greenhouse gas emissions through building design and product selection. The urgent need to reduce both operational and embodied carbon means that building designers must be familiar with transparency documents that facilitate low-carbon product selection. In this course, we review the types of carbon of concern, transparency documents that provide critical information, and tools for sourcing embodied carbon information. We also look at the contribution of insulated metal panels to both low embodied and low operational carbon buildings.

Learning Objectives

  • Define operational and embodied carbon and describe methods and tools for the reduction of both.
  • Select EPDs that meet the requirements of the LEED Materials and Resources credit Environmental Product Declarations and recall the tips for comparing products using EPDs.
  • Recall the types of HPDs, the data they provide, and their applicability to LEED v4.1 rating system credits.
  • Select insulated metal panels that contribute to both operational and embodied carbon reductions.

Faculty BIO

Currently serving as the Definitions Committee Co-Chair for the Rainscreen Association in North America, Andrew has spent the last decade specializing in rainscreen systems and building enclosure. He has assisted in the design and development of innovative rainscreen assemblies, trained dozens of installers on how to handle, fabricate, and install various types of materials and systems, and provided hundreds of hours of continuing-education AIA courses centered around building science and rainscreen concepts.
