Gas & Electric Fireplace Design: Health & Wellness Throughout the Home, 2024
CEU: 0.1 | CEU Code: NA-EN-194301-0125

Fireplaces have become standard in living rooms and dens, but gas and electric fireplaces can enhance many other areas of the home. This course reviews studies on the health and wellness benefits of fireplaces; architects and designers will learn how to add value when working with clients by providing them with scientific research that shows including fireplaces in home design has positive impacts onphysical and mental health. Heat management methods, fireplace types and configurations, and media and design options are also discussed.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the findings and significance of two studies that measure how the presence of a fireplace can lower the stress levels and improve the cognitive performance of occupants.
  • Summarize the results and implications of research on occupant emotions and value perceptions inspired by home amenities like fireplaces.
  • Discuss how gas and electric fireplaces can safely and comfortably provide a supplementary heat source in different spaces and the types, configurations, and options available for an array of room conditions and design goals.
  • Explain the benefits of fireplaces throughout the home in a variety of spaces to promote the health and wellness of occupants.

Faculty BIO

What drives people to learn? I strive to understand this so I can create high-impact, multi-modal learning experiences. There's always time for a good cup of coffee and I love listening to an individual's story, the anecdotes and analogies that I can learn from. I thrive to collaborate and make mistakes because that's where the real learning happens.
