Beauty from Waste: A Circular Economy Case Study, 2024
CEU: 0.1 | CEU Code: KO-EN-196001-0425

The United Nations has set 2030 as the deadline for member nations to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The construction industry has set complementary goals, including the AIA 2030 Commitment to reach net zero emissions in the built environment by 2030. This course discusses how circular economy building products are necessary to achieve sustainable design goals and presents the case study of Kohler WasteLAB, a small manufacturing business within Kohler Company that creates beautiful products for the home from waste.

Learning Objectives

  • Recall the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) framework and identify how the business and design community can specifically address Sustainable Development Goal 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.
  • Describe the circular economy, its importance to business and our planet, and how it differs from recycling.
  • Explain the relationship between embodied carbon and the circular economy.
  • Describe how one manufacturer successfully applies the concepts of the circular economy to turn manufacturing waste into high-value products through an innovative design and manufacturing process.
