Concrete Waterproofing with Crystalline Technology, 2024

Historically, traditional waterproofing methods involve the placement of a barrier or membrane between the concrete and water. Unlike membranes and other surface systems, crystalline waterproofing is designed to make the concrete itself waterproof. This course discusses how crystalline waterproofing technology provides a high level of performance to concrete structures and what design professionals need to know in order to specify and understand how this chemical technology can improve building projects, cut costs, and help earn LEED credits.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the nature of concrete and the mechanics by which water can transit through concrete structures, and discuss why waterproofing is important.
  • Determine how crystalline waterproofing technology improves the durability of concrete structures and reduces maintenance.
  • Discuss the green benefits of crystalline technology and how it contributes to earning LEED credits.
  • Identify appropriate crystalline technology product applications for various types of concrete construction.
  • Analyze how crystalline technology admixtures can impact building life cycle and project construction cost.

Faculty BIO

Jim Caruth has a bachelor's degree of applied science in civil engineering from the University of Waterloo in Ontario. He is a professional engineer, member of the Board of Directors of the British Columbia chapter of the American Concrete Institute, and is a past Committee Chair for the BC Ready Mixed Concrete Association. Jim is a past voting member of the Canadian Standards Association A3000 Cementitious Materials Compendium. Jim has over 20 years of experience in BC's cement and concrete industry.
