Insulated Metal Panels: The Perfect Envelope Solution, 2024

Fundamentally, a building envelope functions as an environmental separator, and has specific hygrothermal control requirements. This course examines how insulated metal panels (IMPs) create the perfect envelope solution, incorporating the same control layers as site built wall systems. Discussions include: building envelope design; perfect/universal walls; and the use of IMPs to provide the building envelope's exterior finish, and the air, vapor, water, and thermal barriers.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the physics of building envelopes, including hygrothermal loads, control layers, climate zones, and cladding functions.
  • Design a proper building envelope by providing control layer continuity at wall, roof, and slab connections.
  • Explain how IMPs are an example of a perfect/universal wall, and perform the same functions as multi-component wall systems.
  • Recall how IMP joint design and control layers contribute to performance and meeting energy code requirements.
  • Summarize how IMP design addresses hydrostatic pressure and wind driven rain to mitigate rainwater penetration.

Faculty BIO

With over 26 years of experience in architecture and the past 19 of those as a registered architect, Kevin has worked on a diversified collection of projects including the urban high-rise, retail, healthcare, multi-family, and major industrial building types. Kevin's role at Metl-Span, a Nucor company is to combine his experience as an architect and his technical knowledge of the insulated metal panel to provide an unprecedented level of project support. Design assistance, specification development, product research, and installation training are several of the adaptable roles that Kevin can fill while ensuring the smooth management and successful completion of the design intent.
