Metal Roof & Wall Systems: Specifying for Aesthetics, Durability, and Energy Efficiency, 2024
CEU: 0.1 | CEU Code: DU-EN-125102-0723

Standing seam metal roofing has been used successfully in the United States for centuries, and proper specification is key to realizing its intended performance. Examined here are: the factors driving the demand for standing seam metal roof and wall systems; standing seam panel basics; gauge and grade; oil canning; specification considerations; testing standards; and forming, delivery, storage, handling and warranty.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain how standing seam cool roofs reduce surface temperatures and air temperatures inside buildings, improving human health and comfort by preventing heat-related illnesses and deaths.
  • Discuss how standing seam cool roofs lower energy consumption and decrease the production of associated air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Identify key testing standards used to assess standing seam metal roof performance related to wind uplift, air exfiltration, water infiltration, and fire resistance.
  • Use knowledge of metal gauge and grade, coatings, corrosion and galvanic reaction, and material forming, delivery, storage, and handling, as well as warranties to specify a durable, long-lasting, energy-efficient standing seam metal roofing system.

Faculty BIO

James R. Townsend (Jim) has been involved in the roofing industry for 30 plus years. He began his career on the contracting side of the industry; marketing system design for conventional and metal roof systems. Later he recognized a need to address key issues regarding roofing failure and design deficiencies.

As a past member of the NRCA, Construction Specification Institute (CSI), current member as a Fraternal Member of The American Consultants League, and current member of the Roof Consultants Institute, Jim formed his own forensics firm. He specialized in building envelopes, failure analysis, litigation, and deposition, relative to premature failure of warranted roof systems.

During the last 26 years, Jim has enjoyed a successful career working with the manufacturing industry in sales and the architectural community relative to due diligence and cost avoidance on roof design. As Product Manager for Exceptional Metals, a division of Duro-Last, Inc. Jim works with architects, roofing contractors, and engineers throughout North America pertaining to liabilities associated with specifications for conventional and standing seam roofing as well as perimeter edge metal design in reference to ES 1 (Edge Standard).
