Louver Design and Selection: What Every Architect Should Know, 2024

Today's louvers not only are functional but also offer enhanced architectural design to the façade of many buildings. More than just a hole in a wall, louvers are responsible for reducing or eliminating water infiltration and offer protection from heavy storms and hurricanes. Different types of louvers and their applications are discussed in this course as well as specific terminology, AMCA/BSRIA testing procedures, and the Certified Ratings Program.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe louver types that facilitate airflow, provide a water-resistant barrier, act as a vision screen, or act as an acoustical barrier.
  • Select an appropriate louver by considering the requirements of air volume, rain defense, structural integrity, noise, and aesthetics.
  • Explain louver performance terminology: free area, pressure drop, water penetration, and wind-driven rain.
  • Relate AMCA/BSRIA testing procedures and the Certified Ratings Program to the selection of a louver.

Faculty BIO

Having spent over fifteen years as a specification sales manager with Construction Specialties, Inc., Mr. David Murray specializes in unique product solutions for the most complex of louver applications and is regarded as both a valuable consultant and product expert in this field. Mr. Murray routinely consults with architects, designers, and mechanical engineers on aesthetic, structural, and performance issues for commercial construction products in the built environment, focusing on architectural louvers, fixed exterior aluminum shading systems, and decorative aluminum grille products.
