Content Description

SBS Modified Bitumen Roofing and Underlayment Systems, 2024
CEU: 0.1 | CEU Code: MB-EN-143402-0623

Choosing the correct roofing materials is a critical first step for builders, architects, and designers as they construct a new building, and for facility managers who work with these professionals to remodel existing buildings. This program examines SBS modified bitumen roofing and underlayment systems and includes discussions on the properties of SBS modified bitumen membrane, applications, testing, codes and standards, and underlayments, and provides a comparison with other commercial roofing materials.

Learning Objectives

  • Recall the evolution of modified bitumen roofing systems to improve characteristics in relation to elasticity, softening point, and fatigue resistance, and the applicable UL, FM Global, ASTM, and Title 24 tests, standards, and performance criteria.
  • Describe SBS modified bitumen membrane surfacing options and their impact on energy-efficient building performance and fire rating.
  • Discuss how the SBS roofing system, flashing details, and installation process create a watertight design that withstands movement and temperature fluctuations, protecting the roof structure and building occupants.
  • Compare the use of SBS modified bitumen membrane underlayment to organic felt in terms of tear resistance, longevity, water resistance, and level of protection, and the impact this has on the integrity of the roof structure.

Faculty BIO

Bahman Behbehani has over 25 years' experience in modified bitumen roofing. He has held a variety of positions at MBTechnology, starting with purchasing and later on involving marketing and sales. In his current role, he oversees the day-to-day operation of the sales and marketing department. To address the ongoing demand for energy-efficient and green roofing systems, he has been instrumental in introducing Title 24-compliant roofing membranes as well as a roofing system line that incorporates recycled rubber. He also launched the company's unique 'Free Maintenance" program which provides free maintenance and inspections throughout the life of the roofing system. This program is being marketed under the trade name 'MBCare".

Mr. Behbehani holds a master's degree of engineering in operations research and industrial engineering from Cornell University.
