Beneficial acoustic environments are especially important in healthcare facilities as inappropriate acoustics can be damaging to patients and stressful and tiring to staff. Because a beneficial acoustic environment plays an important role in supporting health, safety, and well-being for all occupants, acoustic issues are now a key component of healthcare design guidelines. This course explores the impacts of acoustics on healthcare, outlines the relevant acoustic standards and guidelines, and describes the methods by which designers can address the issues and improve healthcare facility conditions for patients, families, and healthcare workers.

Learning Objectives

  • Recall those aspects of acoustics that are detrimental to heath when designing healthcare facilities.
  • Specify design approaches and materials that improve healthcare acoustic environments.
  • Design healthcare facilities that meet or exceed all applicable acoustic standards and guidelines.
  • Utilize the results of healthcare assessments to prioritize acoustic design solutions.

Faculty BIO

Jason Ellis is the General Manager for the Cubicle Curtain division of Construction Specialties, Inc. During his 7 years with C/S, Mr. Ellis has been part of three different divisions within Construction Specialties, all of which held the intent of improving the way healthcare interiors look and feel to enhance the full patient experience. He is an accredited LEED Green Associate and is passionate about the pursuit of safer environments for the well-being of people. Jason has a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering from Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT).
