Under-Slab Vapor Barriers: Restricting Moisture and Soil Gas Infiltration, 2024

Moisture and soil gas beneath concrete slabs can cause a myriad of problems in both residential and commercial applications. The causes and consequences of these problems are reviewed in this course, along with a discussion on the types and characteristics of under-slab water vapor and soil gas barriers.

Learning Objectives

  • List the sources of moisture affecting the durability of concrete slabs and flooring materials.
  • Describe the consequences of both liquid water and water vapor migration in concrete slabs that impact the resiliency of flooring applications, the indoor air quality of the building, and the health of the building occupants.
  • Define the various moisture measurement tests that are performed to evaluate the moisture content in concrete.
  • Discuss the characteristics, installation, and critical specification considerations related to vapor barriers to evaluate a product's suitability and long-term performance.
  • Explain the features and industry standards of under-slab soil gas barriers designed to improve air quality by preventing harmful soil gases from entering a building.

Faculty BIO

Dario has over 10 years' experience in the construction industry specializing in computer aided drafting (CAD), construction management, product sales and marketing, and A/E specification work. As product manager for ISI Building Products moisture control division, Dario focuses his efforts on helping building designers and owners prevent moisture migration through slab on grade, below grade, and crawl space applications.
