Introduction to Air Barrier Systems, 2024

Air barriers improve the health and comfort of building occupants, improve energy efficiency, and prevent premature degradation of materials, increasing the structure's life cycle. A successful air and moisture barrier system means under-slab, below-grade, and above-grade systems must work together to provide a continuous barrier. This course looks at above-grade air barrier systems and their types and components. Continuity and compatibility, specification, and installation challenges are also considered.

Learning Objectives

  • Define types of moisture movement within the building envelope, including liquid, vapor, and airborne moisture.
  • Identify potential issues with uncontrolled moisture movement.
  • Identify building components and systems associated with preventing moisture infiltration.
  • Properly specify and detail air barrier materials and associated components in building applications.
  • Discuss installation requirements for a successful air, water, and vapor barrier installation.

Faculty BIO

Russell Snow, FABAA, BSS, CSP, CTR, is the regional sales manager for W. R. MEADOWS OF CANADA. In addition to being sales manager, Russ is the product group manager and building science specialist for W.R. MEADOWS, INC. and is responsible for the building envelope line of products. Russ has over 25 years of experience in the construction industry, including building envelope development, concrete restoration, and products used in the treatment of concrete. In addition to his responsibilities with W. R. MEADOWS, Russ is former chair of the Air Barrier Association of America (ABAA). Since 1997, Russ has been involved with Construction Specifications Canada (CSC) and currently serves as its fourth vice president, with a portfolio covering legislation, conferences, and awards programs. Russ is also a member of ASTM International's E06 (Performance of Buildings) and D08 (Roofing and Waterproofing) Committees.
