Content Description

The ABCs of EPDs: An Introduction to Environmental Product Declarations for Building Designers and Managers, 2024
CEU: 0.125 | CEU Code: PI-EN-168803-0125

The Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is not just an idea about how to 'grade the greenness" of products; it is a well-developed, globally recognized way to make responsible comparisons and decisions regarding sustainable material design and continuous improvement. This course discusses the concept of the EPD as applied to building materials and how to integrate EPDs into design and product selection decisions. Detailed information from different thermal insulation EPDs is used to demonstrate how thermal insulation provides a unique and significant payback in terms of energy and environmental impacts.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the importance of EPDs to sustainable material selection and building design.
  • Explain how EPDs are developed to ensure scientific accuracy and functional comparability.
  • Summarize how EPDs are being incorporated into key green building guidelines, standards, and codes.
  • Evaluate a number of recent EPDs covering different types of building insulation with a goal of determining how they can help in the design of sustainable buildings.

Faculty BIO

Marcin Pazera, PhD, serves as Technical Director of PIMA. In this role, Marcin coordinates technical activities for the polyiso industry, serves as the primary technical liaison to other industry associations, and leads the PIMA codes, product standards, and QualityMark work groups. He joined PIMA in November 2017. Marcin holds a doctoral degree in mechanical engineering from Syracuse University and, over the course of his career, has worked in building science with a focus on evaluating energy and moisture performance of building materials and building enclosure systems. His experience includes work in building enclosure consulting and product manufacturing, encompassing research, testing, product conception and development, computer modeling/analysis, and technical support.
