Description of NFPA 101 2003

Per NFPA's requirements, when purchasing NFPA 2021 Standards and/or 2020 NFPA 70 (NEC), you must subscribe to at least one more NFPA Standard to complete your purchase. This title may be removed during checkout if you choose to add a different NFPA standard to your cart, and pricing will be recalculated accordingly.

Establish public safety with the widely adopted 2003 NFPA 101 ® : Life Safety Code ® !

For nearly a century, people have relied on NFPA 101: Life Safety Code to prevent loss of life from fire, smoke, and panic. When tragedies do occur, investigations invariably reveal serious Life Safety Code violations. That's why so many lawmakers and fire officials rely on the NFPA 101 as the cornerstone of their public safety programs.

The 2003 edition of the Life Safety Code is a complete safety system that includes:

  • Rules for the full range of occupancies
  • Egress requirements, stair markings, and emergency lighting
  • Provisions concerning features of fire protection
  • A sophisticated performance-based option for code compliance
  • References to more than 50 codes and standards such as the National Electrical Code ® , NFPA 13: Installation of Sprinkler Systems and NFPA 72 ® : National Fire Alarm Code ®

Major changes in the 2003 edition:

  • Revised illumination levels for new stairs
  • A section addressing written emergency plans
  • Revised rules for testing of mattresses and upholstered furniture
  • A section with "analytical methods" for determining the fire resistance of building assemblies
  • Criteria that details when smoke compartments need to be sprinklered as part of a rehabilitation of a health care facility
  • Requirements for subdivision of building space in apartment buildings, new hotels, and dormitories
  • A provision for plastic signs and kiosks in mercantile occupancies
  • Changes concerning safe egress requirements in industrial occupancies
  • Requirements that affect bulkheads, stairs, and stair illumination in one- and two-family dwellings

The 2003 Life Safety Code enables you to ensure building features operate smoothly and minimize life-threatening hazards in any occupancy.
