Renamed and approved as an American National Standard, NFPA 1124, Code for the Manufacture, Transportation, and Storage of Fireworks and Pyrotechnic Articles, includes vital requirements for manufacturing and safety in transporting fireworks.
The 2022 edition of NFPA 1124, Code for the Manufacture, Transportation, and Storage of Fireworks and Pyrotechnic Articles, establishes fire and life safety requirements for the manufacturing, transportation, and storage of fireworks, pyrotechnic articles, and any components containing pyrotechnic or explosive compositions.
The Code saw major changes to its scope based on a landmark decision by the NFPA Standards Council.
NFPA 1124, Code for the Manufacture, Transportation, and Storage of Fireworks and Pyrotechnic Articles, does not apply to retail sales, storage, or use of consumer fireworks by the general public. Related requirements have been removed and the consumer fireworks storage requirements for manufacturing facilities have been relocated to Chapter 5, Storage.
NFPA 1124, Code for the Manufacture, Transportation, and Storage of Fireworks and Pyrotechnic Articles, offers critical requirements for fireworks manufacturing operations, including the following:
Record keeping
Site security
Construction
Fire and explosion prevention
Emergency plans
Testing
The 2022 edition of NFPA 1124, Code for the Manufacture, Transportation, and Storage of Fireworks and Pyrotechnic Articles, has also undergone minor editorial changes to bring the document in line with the NFPA® Manual of Style.
This Code is essential for architects, manufacturers, transportation authorities, AHJs, and anyone responsible for fire and explosion safety around fireworks and pyrotechnics.
