This Standard defines the difference between water mist systems and sprinkler systems, as well as clarifies the purpose and various types of applications that benefit from water mist systems. Research and technology for water mist fire protection systems are continually growing. Water mist fire protection systems extinguish fires by displacing oxygen through water vapor, cooling the flames and reducing radiant heat. The 2015 edition of NFPA 750 defines various occupancy classifications that are critical to analyze when designing a water mist fire protection system. In this edition: New Chapter 5: Classification of Occupancies and new Chapter 10: Occupancy Protection Systems address the dynamics of occupancy classification in designing a water mist system. These new chapters are essential for confident system design. In another significant change, the ITM sections for water mist systems (other than those installed in one-and two-family dwellings) were removed and now reference the 2014 edition of NFPA 25: Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems. NFPA 750 details general requirements, along with provisions for all types of water mist systems, components, and hardware. Designers, consumers, AHJs, installers, maintainers, and special experts -- including the various end users from museums and historic preservation societies -- will find more guidance in this important edition of NFPA 750.
